Our Company History
Jena Flow Batteries GmbH was built on the groundbreaking legacy of Jenabatteries GmbH, a pioneer in metal-free redox-flow batteries. The technology was invented and patented in collaboration with Friedrich Schiller University in the early 2010s. In 2013, an interdisciplinary team with key contributions by Dr. Tobias Janoschka, Dr. Martin Hager, and Prof. Ulrich S. Schubert founded JenaBatteries GmbH and systematically advanced the technology to market readiness.
In 2019, the company achieved a breakthrough with the EnergyKeeper, the world’s first metal-free, organic flow battery tested successfully in the field. Despite these technological successes, Jenabatteries GmbH filed for insolvency in 2023 due to financial challenges. Later that year, Jena Flow Batteries GmbH was founded, acquiring the assets and technology of Jenabatteries GmbH. As a subsidiary of Suqian Time Energy Storage, a leading Chinese corporation in the manufacturing of metal-free flow battery systems and their key components, the new entity focuses on advancing the technology and preparing it for European market entry by 2025. Jena Flow Batteries GmbH aims to become a key player in the redox flow battery sector, driving the energy transition forward.
